Gafsons poised to meet challenges of 21st century

Gafsons, a group of steelworks companies, has weathered the storms of past uncertain economic times in Guyana and even expanded. Thus, now that the country's economic system is undergoing reform it is "imminently poised" to serve Guyana's future needs, said Executive Director Sataur Gafoor.

"Our Land of Canaan complex is now complete and our manufacturing operations centralized at this site. Six industrial buildings, administrative offices, staff housing and a wharf enhance our facilities. In addition to our various distribution outlets, our plant-hire section and steel fabrication department reinforce our services."

Gafsons have strengthened personnel in all areas to meet the challenges of the new open market policy of Guyana and to serve a more discriminating Guyanese public.

It has fulfilled contracts in the public and private sectors, supplying steel fabricated punts to the sugar estates of Guyana, and has helped build pontoons for the rehabilitation of the Demerara Harbour Bridge.

The Gafsons Group of Companies includes Barbados Steel Works Limited, Grenada Steel Works Limited and Jamaica Steel Works Limited.

The roots of the Gafsons Group go back to the tumultuous 1950s when the late Abdool Gafoor established a hardware and lumber business in 1953. In 1959, his eldest son, Sataur, the present executive director, joined the business and together they built a reputation in the construction and building industry for competitively supplying good quality hardware items and heavy construction materials such as steel plates, steel rods, galvanized corrugated sheets, paints, glass, mirrors and bathroom fittings among a wide range of carefully sourced products, competing not only with local but with foreign-owned interests.

In the independence year, 1966, A. Gafoor and Sons Limited was registered as a limited liability company. In the 1970s and 1980s the firm provided a regional shipping service with their two vessels, the Haladi and Kolada.

From then on the company moved from strength to greater strength. In 1973 Gafsons Industries Limited was incorporated and, since then, has manufactured a range of essential building products for the local and regional markets.

During uncertain times, Gafsons not only stayed afloat but also was brave enough to expand its operations in anticipation of the needs and expectations of a reformed Guyana. Such entrepreneurship laid the foundation for the industrialization momentum that is evolving in Guyana today.
