The country became politically
independent under the new name, Guyana.
1970
Guyana became a republic and Linden,
Corriverton and Rose Hall
were established as towns.
1972
Guyana hosted the first Caribbean Festival
of Creative Arts (Carifesta).
1973
Guyana became of the original four
members of the newly formed
Caribbean Community (Caricom),
together with Barbados,
Jamaica and Trinidad
and Tobago.
1981
The inaugural ceremony of the first
elected President, Forbes Burnham,
in keeping with the provisions of a new
constitution of 1980 and following the
PNC victory in the General Elections
of December 15, 1980.
1985
The death of Forbes Burnham, who was
succeeded as President by
Hugh Desmond Hoyte.
1997
The death after four years and five months
in office of Cheddi Jagan, who was
succeeded as President by Samuel Hinds.
1999
The resignation on medical grounds of
President Janet Jagan and her replacement
by the young Minister of Finance,
Bharrat Jagdeo.
