Caterpillar awards MACORP for 60-year relationship

The industrial and agricultural sectors of Guyana, and indeed even individual households, are conscious of the presence of Caterpillar in Guyana; from power generation to triple 7 trucks, it's Caterpillar all the way.

The Machinery Corporation of Guyana Limited (MACORP) received a special award from Caterpillar for its 60-year relationship.

General Manager Jorge Medina said that MACORP's aim is to be a leader in all its business ventures. "The activities undertaken are with due regards to the interest of the community, the well-being of its employees and customers' satisfaction." He said the company also aims to produce adequate return on equity for stockholders and maintain strategic financial health."

According to Medina, MACORP's primary activities are to supply the construction, mining, agricultural and industrial sectors of the economy with appropriate machinery, equipment and professional product support at state-of-the-art technology levels. All equipment used in the bauxite industry and in the largest gold mine are Caterpillar. Omai Gold Mines has the capacity to generate 46 megawatts of power for its operation and 22 of that is by Caterpillar. All its trucks and shovels are Caterpillar.

Medina declared, "Our activities undertaken are pursued to full customer satisfaction. All of us at MACORP work together to supply the best solution for customer needs."

In the agricultural sector, MACORP introduced the technology of track belts, which benefited farmers because of the tremendous traction and efficiency of the tracks as well as the mobility of the rubber wheels. This technology resulted in less cost per acre prepared.

In mining the company supplied equipment with an electronically controlled capability to work with Global Positioning Systems (GPS) systems, thus minimizing the cost of production and maximizing utilization. That is a mandatory requirement because the low price and the tendency of the commodity international prices to slow down in construction and civil works is changing the culture of HYMAC and draglines. The company also introduced three years ago, the 300-family excavators that are getting tremendous advances on the old and slow HYMACS. Today in Guyana and other parts of the world, the most popular excavator is the 320B model. "I hope in the near future the HYMAC word will just be HISTORY," said Medina.

MACORP has supported the customers, with financing plans that deliver equipment under lease, rent, rent-to-buy options, including buyback options and any other way to support customer financial needs.

MACORP also has an investment of more than 360 million spares in its warehouse so that customers will have the shortest down time.

In MACORP's workshop any component overhauled is tested in the dynamometer or test bench to guarantee the component will meet factory specifications and component reliability.

Medina proudly quoted the words of Donald Fites, former Caterpillar chairman when he said, "Our single focus will continue to be helping customers all over the world succeed in their business. When we do that, when we make them winners, then employees, dealers, and stockholders win as well. Along with the well being of our employees and customer satisfaction, we are looking for the permanent growing up of MACORP to have resources for more training and employee development, more investment and more product support. To wrap up a package of integral services, MACORP is associated with companies of engineering with international experience in countries' development projects."

Medina asserted that everyone in the company is navigating in the same direction and that Caterpillar and MACORP match their philosophies as a solid body.

He said that Caterpillar America’s vision is working together. "The Caterpillar Americas and Dealer Team builds a leadership edge out of reach of any competitor. We expect all persons to be leaders, providing the most creative solutions to our customers' business problems. Together we seek future challenges to our leadership and turn these into even more competitive advantages.

"Our true focus is on our people - their talents, their growth, and their well-being. Our joint relationship of trust and respect continues to strengthen at all levels and embraces our customers, one by one."

MACORP, said Medina, will continue to exhibit professionalism in the business world and participate actively to build the road to success for the people of Guyana.

"Our chosen activities are to pursue the well-being of our employees." This Medina said is the interest of MACORP's principals who believe that employees are their most valuable asset. Toward this end, MACORP structured a remuneration package that is at the top band of the country's high-quality companies. It is updated according to the individual's performance and the annual inflation rate to guarantee that the purchasing power of their salary will not decline. But this is not enough to keep the high morale of employees, he said. MACORP has a bonus program that stipulates that an employee can earn extra, up to 30 percent of his salary based on his contribution to the company's objectives. To promote the cooperative conscience and to create opportunities for investment that will aid to a better lifestyle, MACORP also is matching a contribution of up to 70 percent of employee savings in MECOO (MACORP’s credit union) - this is becoming a unique plan in the country.

MACORP also has a permanent training program in the technical and administrative areas recruiting trainers from overseas or, in some cases, sending employees overseas to receive training. They believe that this will help develop the highest level of competency in employees and plan to continue this program.
