otherwell Bridge Bhicam Limited, a Bahamas-based engineering and construction company that operates as an affiliate of the Motherwell Group of Scotland, first came to The Bahamas to erect the first four Panamax Super Quay Cranes for the Freeport Container Port. Upon completion, Bhicam was contracted to provide 24-hour maintenance of the terminal.
“We started with 70 employees that were 98 percent Bahamian. As the maintenance contractors for the cranes, we have been able to maintain 43 of those people. They built the cranes and they know how to fix any problems,” said Larry Russell, director and general manager of Bhicam. Bhicam now employs about 103 people in its various divisions.
Bahamians are known to be skilled hard workers. “In fact a project manager for Motherwell Bridge in England, who has been around the world, told me that the weld quality of our local welders is very good,” Russell said proudly.
Because of its committed and able employees, Bhicam has seen other opportunities in other areas of maintenance and construction. “We have just completed a $4.2 million project refurbishing water tanks in Nassau for the Waste and Sewerage Co.,” said Russell.
He noted that with Lloyd Werft, Bahama Rock and other companies coming to the Container Port/Harbour area, Bhicam is anticipating additional expansion in its maintenance installation and instrumentation operations.
Bhicam will also be expanding in the steel fabrication area. The company recently invested $5.5 million in a new 33,000-square-foot facility equipped with Computer Aided Design (CAD) technology.
Russell noted that Bhicam’s goal is to expand to other Caribbean markets and the United States seaboard.
