Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait

The Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait B.S.C. (BBK) was established on 16 March 1971 in accordance with an Amiri decree and started up operations a year later.

The shareholding is a unique structure where 50 percent is held by the general public and quasi government pension fund institutions in Bahrain, while the other 50 percent is held by nine banks and investment companies from the State of Kuwait.

The Bank started with a capital of BD1 (U.S. $2.5 million) back in 1971 and has grown into the largest commercial bank in Bahrain with a capital base of BD 102 (U.S. 270 million). Its total assets at the end of December 1999 were BD 1,028 million (U.S. $ 2.7 billion). The Bank has a regional presence and, in addition, the 20 domestic branches that it has in Bahrain, it also has a branch in the State of Kuwait (the only non-Kuwaiti bank in that market) as well as two branches in Mumbai and Hyderabad in the Republic of India. In addition to these branches, it also has a representative office Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

In the last few years, the Bank has established a number of subsidiaries, including a brokerage company to service customers needs on the Bahrain Stock Exchange. It has also created a separate wholly owned subsidiary to take over the plastic cards business as well as establish a joint venture subsidiary to provide Islamic investment products. This Al Khaleej Islamic Investment Bank is a joint venture with The International Investor from Kuwait.

The Bank is proud of providing a full range of lending, deposit, treasury and investment services using the state-of-the-art technology to various sectors of the domestic and regional markets. For example, the Bank plays a major role in financing infrastructure and industrial projects in Bahrain and the Gulf, as well as creates products and services to cater to the needs of individual borrowers, depositors and investors. To support its various business in Bahrain, in the Region, as in the countries where it has a presence, the Bank has set up at its Head Office a modern foreign exchange, money markets, investment services offering a variety of products to meet the needs of the customer in the areas of foreign exchange, money market, derivatives and mutual funds in alliances with leading money managers from the United States.
