Talking points about Croatia

• Croatia’s tourism potential is virtually unmatched by anyplace in the world. Possibilities abound for US companies to invest in this particular sector. Although the likes of Bill Gates and Steven Spielberg have recently vacationed in Croatia the American public, overall, has yet to discover this gem of the Adriatic.

• The nation considers itself an extension of Western and Central Europe- not the Balkans. Although Croatia welcomes increased trade with its neighbors to the south it feels that nations such as Austria, Germany and the United States are its natural trading partners.

• Croatia has a highly educated population, a factor that should help to make this nation a desirable location for foreign direct investment.

• Croatians are proud of their degree of environmental awareness. Their city streets are clean, their food is pure and full of flavor. The overall population maintains a progressive attitude in terms of ecological matters.

• The party of the late Franjo Tudjman lost badly in the last elections and has splintered. Croatians believe that they finally have a government that, while it has its problems, is on track for helping to establish free- market- based- political policies and for broadening political reform.

• Croatia is a natural ally of the United States: It allowed for the use of its airspace during the NATO lead attacks on Belgrade. It is participating in joint naval exercises with the US. It is a member of the Partnership for Peace program. Its military has been specially trained, by US professionals, for working in harmony with a democratically elected government. It immediately offered its resounding support to the US after the September 11 terrorist attacks.

• Persons of Croatian heritage are clustered in various locations throughout the United States and Canada: Cleveland, Chicago, Minnesota, the Central Valley of California, Pittsburgh, the provinces of Alberta and Ontario.
