Soon to rise up over the huge Nam Van Lakes development, the Macau Tower and Convention and Exhibition Center, is part of Dr. Stanley Ho's vision for the new millennium. Naturally a project of this scale could only be spearheaded by Ho's STDM, which holds the exclusive gambling franchise in Macau. "The Macau Tower is designed to fit in with STDM's objective of further diversifying the gaming industry into even greater development of new tourist and cultural attractions," said Ambrose So, a senior executive for Dr. Stanley Ho business operations. The Tower, rising on reclaimed land at a cost of over $112 million is part of an overall 620 hectare public reclamation between the neighboring islands of Taipa and Coloane. This scheduled impressive center, clad in stone and zinc will provide dazzling views of mainland China, the Pearl River and even the islands of Hong Kong. Dr. Stanley Ho is of the opinion that this closure of the Praia Grande bay and the construction of the eighth highest tower in the world will add to Macau's place in the Zhuhai Economic zone. It is seen as perhaps a parting gesture from the Portuguese administration and a welcome gift for the Chinese as the handover nears. Project manger, David McKern has previously stated to the media, "this is a significant part of STDM's entertainment empire and we are confident that it will become a magnet for attracting more tourism to Macau." The over all master project for this reclaimed land, the Nam Van Lakes project, consists of five zones of commercial, residential and infrastructure development on almost 321 acres. The focus of this "city within a city" dividing two large artificial lakes is scheduled to be completed by April 2000. According to Ho and others associated with this massive project, it does become a symbol of the handover of the territory to China. As a booster for tourism, Stanley Ho believes that the Tower also can be a magnet to bring more visitors to Macau in the new millennium. "This financial commitment is soaring proof of STDM's confidence in the future of Macau as a vibrant and rowing city with a unique heritage," reamrked Dr. Ho. Upon completion the tower will measure 338 meters allowing viewers from the main observation floor to enjoy canyonesque views from both lower and upper levels through floor-to-ceiling glass walls. From that dizzying height, diners will be able to experience a 250 seater revolving floor restaurant. Additionally, there will be a separate outdoor observation deck to truly take the viewers breath away. Both the Tower and the Center are situated in a large paved plaza which will incorporate water features and a large children's playground. A focal point will also include an old-fashioned, mechanized carousel. It is easy now to understand that STDM's vision and commitment to Macau's future. "This new development, blending with Macau's traditional reputation in hospitality, and will beckon visitors to Macau as a tourist destination: a city of culture, relaxation and entertainment," exclaimed Dr. Stanley Ho. |
