Enad hopes to partner with leading detergent producers
State company is holding discussions

37-1.gif (18118 bytes) One of the most successful state giants looking for partners, is ENAD, a leading manufacturer of detergents, cleaning products and cosmetics. The ENAD group has four subsidiaries - SODEOR at Oran, SIDET at Sour-El-Ghozlane, SODER at Mila, and SHYMECA at Algiers.

"We are holding discussions with possible partners who are interested in producing detergents in Algeria," says President , Ahmed Maouche.

"Among them are Procter and Gamble, the world’s leading detergent company, the German firm Henkel and Unilever. These three world leaders are interested in our brands which are strongly implanted in Africa and Algeria. We are very interested in partnership propositions.

"The ENAD has a production capacity of 284,000 tons of detergent - a capacity which does not exist anywhere else in African and Arab countries," he added.

"In 1998, we made a profit of approximately 14 million dollars and in 1999, because we have grown 15 percent, we expect to reach $20 million. We hope to expand our market even further into African countries."

ENAD was set up in 1983 and became part of the State Chemistry, Pharmacy and Fertilizers Holding in 1996. In 1997, it became an industrial group with four autonomous branches. It has a semi-industrial detergent pilot plant, which makes hand wash detergents branded as Isis as well as machine detergents under the name of Telj ('snow'). It has a number of laboratory testing products in accordance with ISO standards.

Three of the detergent complexes will be partially privatized and the other units will pass completely into the private sector.

"We have our own formulas for detergents - for instance we are sending a special order to Iraq and they have asked us for a special, enriched formula

“The local Algerian formula is calculated by price and the hardness of the water,” commented Maouche. "We are ecologically conscious and use biologically degradable materials. Although all our factories are built next to reservoir dams, they are equipped with water treatment plants."

The cosmetics subsidiary SHYMECA has a capacity of 5,840 tons and produces 180 million razor blades every year. Maouche explains that part of the attraction for investors is the company’s highly qualified staff who have an expertise that cannot be found elsewhere on the continent.
