Rest and relaxation
There’s something about the Mediterranean. And there’s nothing like sitting outside on the balcony of the Westin Dragonara Resort on the Dragonara Peninsula in St. Julians, watching the sun set over the sea, drinking a bottle of Maltese wine and nibbling on some local cheese. From below, the chatter of good conversation and the lip-smacking sounds of people drinking an afternoon cappuccino and eating a slice of rich chocolate cake drift upwards. Kids and adults alike are licking their lips as they wait for the happy hour ice cream, which includes a "Highland Fling" made with malt whiskey ice cream, a shortbread biscuit and Drambuie sauce and a "Gamekeeper’s Delight" made of Jagermeister ice cream and topped with wild forest berries.
Down the next level is the swimming pool in which die-hard sun worshippers swim until practically the last ray of sun hits the horizon. Luckily, the sun doesn’t completely set until after 8:30 pm, which leaves plenty of time to get in those last games of Marco Polo or pool tag.
When the elegant buffet restaurant begins to open, guests make their way down the spiral marble staircase to sit under the stars or dine inside. Every night the hotel presents a different selection of fare. The cold appetizer buffet always features platters heaped with fresh vegetables, salmon, salads and other starters. A chef serves the hot food, which can include lamb stew or perhaps a special Maltese dish. Crusty bread and fresh butter complement the meal. But save room for dessert, which can be a platter of assorted cheeses, including local and international varieties, or large slices of homemade cake topped with ice cream and whipped cream and served with a foamy cappuccino. Delicious!
Other guests plan their evening at the Dragonara Casino, situated in a former villa and a quick walk from the hotel. Some choose another of the hotel’s resort restaurants, including the elegant Compass restaurant, which is perfect for a romantic meal, Pallio’s and its Italian and local specialties, or the new Boathouse restaurant which grills fresh fish down at the water’s edge.
If it’s a Wednesday night, then you know quite a few people are waking from an afternoon nap so that they have the energy to dine and dance under the stars until the wee hours at the Reef Club. And if it’s a Sunday, chances are the restaurant is filled with locals and hotel guests alike who come and sit for hours, listening to jazz and eating and drinking like true gourmands. Romantics can’t wait for the Saturday night dinner under the stars. Guests sit on the terrace, right next to the sea, and are treated to an exquisite buffet. Live music sets the early evening atmosphere, while during dessert dancers come out to entertain the guests. But, that’s not all. There’s a gym for those who feel like burning all those calories they eat and a spa for those who are working on purifying and relaxing both the inside and outside.
